Cemetery tour

An orientation tour linking five mapped architectural and memorial sites at Ostfriedhof Munich.

On this page

This tour links five mapped places from the historic entrance area on Sankt-Martins-Platz through the western and central grounds to the crematorium in the east. It focuses on architecture, urn burial and remembrance.

Before your visit

Check seasonal opening hours and save the official PDF from the cemetery map page. Begin at Sankt-Martins-Platz 1. The stops form an editorial sequence, not a signposted or measured route.

The five stops

1. Funeral hall

The large circular, domed building defines the historic entrance area. The forum opens out from here. Its exterior recalls the 1900 building; Hans Döllgast led the reconstruction in 1951–52 after the destruction of the Second World War.

2. Urn hall H

This named urn hall is close to the western cemetery boundary. It illustrates the important role of urn graves and niches alongside earth burial. The map marker identifies the building, not a grave location.

3. Leiber memorial

This named war memorial stands in the southern grounds. On this tour it provides a clearly identified place of remembrance and orientation.

4. Field of the Nameless

The memorial stele commemorates people who suffered political and intellectual oppression between 1933 and 1945. Its open lawn contrasts with the densely occupied burial sections.

5. Municipal crematorium

The eastern main avenue ends at the crematorium, which opened in 1929. Hans Grässel designed the complex with a funeral hall free of religious symbolism. The map point marks the named crematorium.

Orientation and limits

Follow existing cemetery paths between the stops. No reliable information is available for distance, walking time, gradients or a continuously step-free connection. The sequence is not a circular walk and no return route to the exit has been calculated.

Use map filters to add toilets, water points and the access point needed for your return. To locate a particular person, use the grave search guidance rather than this tour.
